Ontario is one of the best bass fishing destinations in the world — and if you know where to look, there's a honey hole for every season.
Spring (May–June): Shallow Spawning Bays As water temps climb above 60°F, largemouth bass move into shallow, weedy bays to spawn. Lake Simcoe, Rice Lake, and the Bay of Quinte are legendary for spring bass. Target areas with sandy or gravel bottoms near weed edges.
Summer (July–August): Deep Structure Once the heat sets in, bass go deep. Focus on points, humps, and submerged rock piles in 15–25 feet of water. Lake Erie's north shore and the Kawartha Lakes offer excellent summer smallmouth action.
Fall (September–October): Pre-Winter Feed Fall is arguably the best time to catch big bass. They're aggressive and feeding hard before winter. Work rocky shorelines and transition areas between weeds and open water. The St. Lawrence River is a fall smallmouth paradise.
Winter (Ice Season): Slow and Deep Ice fishing for bass is underrated in Ontario. Tip-ups with live bait over 20–30 feet of water near structure can produce surprisingly large fish. Always check local regulations before heading out.
